What Is Lane Departure Warning

Lane departure warning uses a camera that looks ahead to tell if you’re drifting out of lane. If your turn signal is off, it alerts you.

Lane departure warning systems rely on road markings to determine if you have drifted out of your lane. If there are no lane markings present, this system may not be able to determine your lane position.

Lane keeping assist is a feature that, in addition to the lane departure warning system automatically take steps to ensure the vehicle stays in its lane. Some vehicles combine adaptive cruise control with lane keeping systems to provide additional safety.

Lane departure warning systems are a group of safety technologies that are primarily designed to prevent high-speed accidents on highways and freeways. There are a few different types of lane departure warning systems, and some of them are more proactive than others.

Lane departure warning systems are technologies that warn drivers when the vehicle begins to move out of a lane that is defined on the road by painted lines. The systems don’t function if the driver is indicating, only if they move across a definite detectable line while not indicating.

The lane-departure warning is so bothersome that about two-thirds of owners turn off the feature, according to an IIHS study.

What the lane departure warning light means As you drive along, the camera is constantly watching for lines on the road. If you start drifting to one side without an active turn signal, the computer can detect this movement through the camera and will provide a warning.

With lane-departure warning (LDW), visual, audible, and/or tactile warnings—such as steering wheel or seat vibrations—alert the driver when the car crosses lane markings.

If you have a lane departure warning system, that system will set off some bells and whistles, or blinking red lights, or whatever else the manufacturer decided would best alert the driver to their mistake.
